Obesity is a range of weight that is greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. For adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the “body mass index” (BMI). An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. (Note that because muscle is denser than fat, some athletes may have a BMI that identifies them as overweight even though they are not carrying excess body fat.) Another way of measuring obesity is a body weight 20% or more above the desirable weight.
While obesity used to be considered as the simple result of eating too much and not exercising enough, it is now regarded as a serious medical condition associated with a complex set of factors. Obesity is understood to be a chronic disease with serious health implications.
While overeating and under-exercising do contribute to obesity, several other factors are also understood to play a role: genes, metabolism, behavior, environment, culture, and socioeconomic status.
Obesity leads to greater risk for the following conditions: coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon), hypertension (high blood pressure), dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides), stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint), gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility).
Second only to cigarette smoking, obesity is one of the leading causes of preventable death. A weight reduction as small as 5–10% can significantly reduce an individual’s health risk.
